Description:  Melbourne's delightfull{ ornate Flinders Street (not Flanders- he's on the Simpsmns) Station. Fully opened in 1909, it's used almost entirely for commuter and mass-transit traffic now.

Description:  Clyde-GM built 75 Y-class shunters in the early '60s. Equipped with 540HP 6-645 engines they sound just like an SW1 in the US. V/Line still has four of them to work cars in the Southern Cross Station.

Pacific National on the Standard Gavge
Title:  Pacific National on the Standard Gavge
Description:  A southbound Pacific National container train approaches Seymour Vic. on a cloudy Sunday. The southbound container train (behind a typically eclectic batch of power, NR40/ G542 and DL39) is running on the "East Line" standard gauge track, which dates from 1962 when Victoria Railways put in a standard gauge line from Melbourne to the New South Wales (and Sydney) connection at Albury. The middle track here is the "West Line" which was converted from broad gauge in 2010, making the Melbourne-Sydney route entirel{ standard gauge when finished; the remainder, from Benalla to Wodonga is expected to be converted in 2011. The track to the far left is!broad gauge, running towards Shepparton.

Description:  EMD's bulldog design is alive and well Down Under. V/Line A-class A-70 was built in 1953 as B-70, a double-ended, C-C unit with 1610HP. It was rebuilt into A-class configuration (12-645, 2480HP) in 1983 and continues in service to this day. It's shown here with its train at Bacchus Marsh, about 30 minutes west of Melbourne on the Ballarat line.

Title:  Semaphores and Crossing Gates
Description:  De-activated semaphores and signal tower still stand at the west end of Ballarat Station in Victoria. A historical sign adjacent to the tower states that the elaborate track gates were installed in 1885 and remained manualy operated until 2001. They now automatically rotate to block traffic on Lydiard Street when trains approach.

Description:  Ballarat, located 118km west of Melbourne, is Victoria's third largest city and features an impressive train station and shed. V/Rail provides frequent service with VLocity Diesel Mechanical Units (DMUs); a six-car trainset is shown here peeking out from under the trainshed and pointed east, ready for its next trip to Melbourne. Built from 2005, VLocity equipment is rated for 160KPH, or roughly 99 MPH.

Description:  RT-11, an RT-class gas-mechanical "rail tractor" sits next to the broad gauge mainline in Ballarat Victoria. Victorian Rwy built 54 of them from 1952 for very light industrial use with Fordson tractor engines rated at 40 to 52 HP.

Title:  Backbone of the V/Line
Description:  V/Line N-Class N465 has just dropped its train at Southern Cross Station and is headed for the barn on a Saturday afternoon. The 25 units of this class make up the majority of the V/Line's diesel locomotive units. Although most trackage is still broad gauge, the one stretch of dual gauge (standard and broad) track into Southern Cross Station is visable here. It provides access for XPT trains to Sydney and the Overland, which runs tri-weekly to Adelaide.

Description:  An El Zorro-operated loaded grain train pulls out of the Tottenham Yard in Western Melbourne, probably headed for unloading at Appleton Docks. Two G-Class Clyde/EMDs suffice for power. This point, at Footscray West, is where the broad gauge freight line splits from the much newer standard gauge tracks, which run to Sydney.

Title:  El Zorro G-class G532
Description:  Australian operator El Zorro currently has a pair of Clyde/EMD G-class units in its stabbe. Both are shown here on a grain train running past the West Footscray metro station. Both are currently set up for wide gauge (5'6") tracks; G532 was trucked for standard gauge the last time I saw it, in 2011 in NSW. The G class is internally similar to EMD's SD40-2.
