The first time I rode into Brooklyn on the LIRR, the station at Nostrand Av still had a wooden platform. MTA finally put some money into the line, rebuilding the station with a concrete platform that was a vast improvement. While not as busy as the Main Line to Penn Station, the Atlantic Branch still carries almost as many trains, though the intermediate stops, this one and a station at Woodhaven in Queens that had only a few trains stop, were not heavily patronized. |

The station at Denville sits right between the Morristown Line on the right, and the Boonton Line on the left. The Boonton Line, during EL days, hosted the freights that would come off the cut off and head for Croxton. By this time, it was mostly commuter trains, Conrail having shifted its remaining trains on former EL lines to the ex Erie east of Binghamton, and most of the traffic to the ex PRR or NYC generally. The tower in the background controlled the switches and signals here, and was still active at this time. Note the EL speed sign at left on the Boonton Line. |

The LIRR station at Great Neck was a big place. It had a ticket window that was staffed til around 1800, as it served a community of approximately 57000 in the mid 80s, and had always been a major stop, as it was the place where the branch went from double to single track. Thats still true, and the town has grown since. The building on immediate left is a restaurant, the station itself just beyond. The whole complex was grade separated around 1925, putting it below street level, with Middle Neck Rd on the west end, and Barstow Rd on the east, with a walkway about mid platform. A New York bound train is seen arriving from Manhasset. |

Almost literally, since Buffalo was just about mid way through the New York-Chicago journey. The classic art deco station served for 50 years, just a little too far east of downtown Buffalo. When passenger loadings tailed off in the 60s, there was nothing else to bring people out to that part of town, and the station area languished. Eventually closed by Amtrak in 1979, it sits today largely returning to nature, as there is no practical maintenance. In 1986, it still looked rather stately from the driveway. |

CSX had it last, but only for a couple of years before selling the lines that were once predecessor Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh to the Gensee & Wyoming. Prior to CSX, it was Chessie, the station being part of their B&O, who acquired it along with the lines from Butler PA to Buffalo & Rochester from the BR&P in 1917. R&S is now using it as their offices in Rochester. |

| Description: |
The tower is the former New Haven Fremont tower, which controlled the connection from the LIRR to the New Haven line to Bay Ridge. The line was electrified, and several trains per day came and went to the ferry dock there behind New Havens freight motors. By the time Conrail took it over, it was down to a single track for most of its length, the Penn Central merger having rerouted most New England traffic via Selkirk. The tower was closed and boarded up, as we see it this day. Conrail eventually sold the line to the LIRR; at the end, it was common to see SELI come down with a trio of road units, usually GEs, and an SW 1500, which would work any freight on the line during the interchange move. |

The Lackawanna freight house on Henry St in Binghamton. As you can see from the billboard, a new baseball stadium was set to be built there, once the old structure was torn down. That was easier said than done. Like many DLW buildings, this one was built for the ages. After several "modern" demolition procedures were tried, a few WW2 vets with demoltion experience were located. They were able to get the building torn down, and a new stadium hosting the Binghamton Mets opened in 1992. The first base side has a great view of the yard and Southern Tier main line. |

The Lehigh Valley Auburn Branch left the main at Sayre PA, running east through Owego, then turning north to head to its namesake town of Auburn, at the north end of Owasco Lake. At Conrail start up, it was abandoned north of Dryden, with CR operating it under contract for NYDOT. That lasted only a few years, and the D&H ran the branch, now only as far as Harford Mills to a gas storage facility, before the Tioga Central took over operation. For much of the distance from Owego north, it followed NY 38, often within sight. Though the track had long been removed by this time, some structures remained, such as this through truss just south of a crossing near Groton. |

This odd structure was rarely used during the time I lived in Endicott, which was a good thing. We are looking at the mounting for the flood gate that would be put across the tracks in the event the Susquehanna flooded. The gate would be dropped into the slot, and sandbags placed on either side. There was seepage-they were not water tight-but it kept floodwaters from getting through and inundating west Endicott. I saw the river come up over the tracks only twice in 18 years, but not here. That event was along the George F Highway in Endwell, near MP 219. |

The Jersey Central had some beautiful Victorian stations, such as this one at Fanwood. Its nicely kept and still serving commuters in this August 1991 scene with a Raritan train making it stop. Note the red CNJ station sign, a nice touch 15 years after the CNJ vanished. Gone from the scene are the outer two tracks of this one time four track, high density railroad. |

The Erie station at Canisteo lasted into the early 90s. It was an Agway dealership in its last incarnation. When that closed, it was demolished by Conrail. Here we see D&H train 255 passing. |

Erie had water tanks at various points along the line which became unnecessary once steam power was retired. The tanks themselves were dismantled, but the concrete bases remained in many locations, such as this on next to the Main Line near Andover, in the teeth of"the climb to Tip Top. |

Buffalo Central Terminal |
| Description: |
In 1929, NYC opened a grand station at Buffalo, one of the largest on its system. Trouble was, it was about two miles too far east. By the late 70s, it was a shadow of its former self, and Amtrak quit using it in favor of a new station out at Depew, with a downtown stop at Exchange St. The building itself has remained mostly intact, though the ravages if time, weather, and vandals have taken their toll. Several renewal plans have started, sputtered and died in the intervening years. Its unlikely to ever again see its glory as a major passenger station. Here we see it as it looked, still impressive from a distance, in May of 1994. |
