This odd structure was rarely used during the time I lived in Endicott, which was a good thing. We are looking at the mounting for the flood gate that would be put across the tracks in the event the Susquehanna flooded. The gate would be dropped into the slot, and sandbags placed on either side. There was seepage-they were not water tight-but it kept floodwaters from getting through and inundating west Endicott. I saw the river come up over the tracks only twice in 18 years, but not here. That event was along the George F Highway in Endwell, near MP 219. |
