CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5069
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5069
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5069, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5069 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45702) and sold for scrap in September 1953. The date and location chosen based on the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet. The locomotive looks pretty tidy,so figuring out its last class shopping date might pinpoint the date of this photo, and maybe the Galesburg roundhouse in the background?

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072 at Longmont, Colorado on October 26, 1939, photograph by R. B. Graham, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5072 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45760) and sold for scrap in April 1955. The locomotive has an extended smokebox, generally the sign of a lignite burner. The lignite coal produced more cinders and ash requiring more screens and baffles. There's also a yellow square painted at the far end of the coal bunker, advising hostlers which coal to load.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5074
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5074
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5074 at Creston, Iowa, date, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5074 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 ( c/n 45792 ), retired and sold for scrap in June 1953. Hol Wagner adds the following: As for the photo of 5074, although both Creston and Hastings got identical concrete coal chutes in 1937, I'm pretty sure this view is at Creston, as the 5074 was assigned to the St. Joseph Division until 1940 and then moved east to the Galesburg Division. This also pretty well dates the photo to the 1937-40 period, and with the capped stack a good guess would be 1940 as it was being ready for movement to Galesburg. Of even greater interest to me, however, is that the 5074's tender is from an S-1/S-1-A/S-2/S-2-A Pacific and rides on Commonwealth drop equalizer tender trucks; it's the only O-1-A I've ever seen so equipped.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5079 at Keenesburg, Colorado on January 11, 1941, photograph by J. Schick, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5079 was built by Baldwin in June 1918 (c/n 48994) and sold for scrap in November 1960. At an unknown date it was converted to burn oil. I would guess this was a switching move, based on the open door on the stock car.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quinct Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5105 presumed at Eddystone, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in December 1920, photograph by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Completed by Baldwin in December 1920 (c/n 54174), retired in December 1953, this locomotive was part of an order for 133 ClaIs O-1-A 2-8-2 types built between 1917 and 1923. CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136 at Lincoln, Nebraska on May 26 1956, photograph by M. D. McCarter, Louis Zadnichek collection. Number 5136 was built by Baldwin in July 1922 ( c/n 55500 ) and sold for scrap in December 1957. It was equipped with 27 X 30 cylinders and 64 inch drivers. The extended smokebox indicates this locomotive was set up to burn Lignite coal which, due to the high ash content, required more screening in the smokebox. The following is from Hol Wagner:

Known as L&B Front End ( Lignite & Bituminous), it worked for both, and that's why the extension and its "guts" did not have to be removed when a locomotive was reassigned to non-lignite burning divisions; only the grates had to be changed. And for reference, the Omaha, Lincoln and Wymore divisions were never lignite burning divisions. Alliance, McCook, Sterling, Casper and Sheridan were the only ones, but Sterling and Casper became oil-burning divisions by 1930. To the best of my knowledge, the only Q locomotives that came from the builder with L&B front ends were the class B-1 and B-1-A Mountains ( 4-8-2 ); all others were fitted with them by the railroad.
