Title:  D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 498
Description:  D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 498 at Alamosa, Colorado on August 18, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 498 was built by Baldwin in 1902 as a standard gauge 2-8-0, D&RG Class 190 1109. It was renumbered to Class C-41 1009, rebuilt during 1930 at D&RGW's Burnham Shops to D&RGW narrow gauge K-37 498. It is seen here having the flues renewed. Unfortunately, I was in the neighborhood for only a week, so I did not see it under steam.

Description:  The D&RGW 498, a K37, 2-8-2 locomotive drops it's fire over the ash pit at Alamosa, Colorado. This locomotive started life as a stamdard gauge 2-8-0 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902. In 1930this engine was rebuilt by the D&RGW into a narrow gauge 2-8-2.

Title:  Rio Grande K-37 2-8-2 499
Description:  At the roundhouse at Alamosa was 1930 built K-37 499. It was originally Standard Gauge 2-8-0 1125. 499 was retired in 1970 and stored in Alamosa. In 1981 it was sold to the Durango & Silverton. During the 1990s, it was traded with K-36 486 and moved to Royal Gorge Park near Canon City where it is currently on display.

Description:  Photographed in its 10th year on the deadline; #499 (Baldwin c/n 20753) was built in 1902 as a standard-gauge consolidation and rebuilt in 1930 as a narrow-gauge outside-frame mikado. It was sold to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge in 1981 and later traded to Royal Gorge Park for K-36 #486. Currently displayed with cosmetic restoration at Royal Gorge.
