Description:  CN through freight pauses next to the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 14 May '17. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train originated in Neenah, dropped off a string of cars here, and is now headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the '90s and Pete's Junction (possibly Palomino Pete's Junction) ca. the '70s.

Title:  CN 9530 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Story St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Jun. '18. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently (since 6 May) as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The intesesting, old building at 302 S. Story St., partially visible beyond the locomotives, is currently home to The Train Station. Their facebook page describes it as a venue for “live music, open mic, educationam presentations, film showings, yoga, classes, meetings.” The building dates to at least 1921, when it was a neighborhood grocery store owned by Otto J. Ruhsam. Circa the ‘50s it was the Heigl Grocery Beer Depot. The area to the rhght was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.

IC 3115 and CN 9530
Title:  IC 3115 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing (just out-of-frame to right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 21 Jul. '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. A pair of tall buildings loom above the second locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St. The taller one is the former Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., erected in 1952. Since AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building. There used to be six tracks here, only the main line remains.

GTW 5856 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 5856 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 31 Aug. '18. The MOW worker was monitoring the recently replaced railroad signals and gate. A motorist died after he failed to negotiate the jog in S. Memorial Dr. (while traveling at excessive speed), struck the median, rolled his vehicle, and knocked down a street light, traffic signal, and the grade crossing signal at 0217 hours on 30 Aug. You can see his tire tracks in the grass. This portion of the intersection was closed until the railroad signals could be replaced. As soon as the local cleared the intersection, the MOW worker removed the remaining barricades from the street. The interesting brick building at right is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

Description:  A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right).

CN 9530, et al.
Title:  CN 9530, et al.
Description:  A CN local works the Little Chute Industrial Park via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. Train had two locomotives, GTW 6226 and CN 9530. I haven't found a name for the facility on the right; it has a covered spur but the turnout has been gone for quite a while. The tan building at left is Absolute Supply, 1560 Bohm Dr. The blue-gray building on the left is Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed, 1700 Bohm Dr., an active rail customer.

Description:  A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Title:  IC 9605 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local pulls 19 cars across the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 2 Oct. '18. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-appreciated brush clearing along the tracks here, so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

Title:  GTW 5850 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 14 Oct. '18. There are two milepost markers, a newer one on a fence post next to the telephone pole, and an older one halfway up the telephone pole. The large brick building partially visible above the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

CN 9530
Title:  CN 9530
Description:  CN 9530 rests on the former C&NW bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The local is preparing to depart after servicing Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family. Some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004.

CN 9530
Title:  CN 9530
Description:  CN 9530 passes the historic, but unfortunately idled, Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., at Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. It did not last long under the new owner. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI. The George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history, except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge.
