ERIE 4-6-2 #2928 |
Description: |
Still fairly new to the Erie roster is this handsome 4-6-2 Pacific. Built as a heavy USRA 4-6-2 Pacific by Alco-Richmond in March of 1919, this muscle added a much needed boost to the Erie passenger service. It was rebuilt to inclued an Elesco feedwater heater which bumped up the tractive effort some. The loco ended up in it later years as part of the North New Jersey commuter service. After nearly 32 years of service, the loco was scrapped by Luria Bros & Co in Buffalo, NY on 11/17/1950 This is a Paul Prescott photo. |

This is a photo by Paul Prescott of Erie 4-6-2 #2928 in Chicago, IL. From the load of caol in the tender and steam visible, it appears to be ready for another run east, maybe even the Erie Limited. It was rebuilt to inclued an Elesco feedwater heater which bumped up the tractive effort some. The loco ended up in it later years as part of the North New Jersey commuter service. ERIE 4-6-2 #2931 |
Description: |
Nice action shot of Erie Pacific #2931 stopped at the passenger station in Hammond, IN. As a Hoosier, I'm always happy to post an Indiana related photo like this one! This is now a 16 mile Erie Lackawanna bicycle path starting near Crown Point and ending in downtown Hammond near this location. If you look carefully, you can see 3 watchtowers in a row down the track. Twenty of these "USRA heavy"-units were built by Baldwin and Alco-Richmond in 1919 for the Erie RR. All lasted into the early 1950's. Specifics - K5 class, 79" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylimders, engine weight of 306,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,925 lb. Lamar M. Kelley photo |

Description: |
The rear wall of the East Somerville roundhouse was glass brick which made the interior very light. The large size of the building makes the rear wall in my shot look almost straight when in fact it is circular (the radious of the rear wall was probably 300 feet but Im guessing. P-2d 3622 was built by Schenectady in 1911 and scrapped Sept. 1956. The engine in front is H-2a 0-8-0 622 which was retained for snow melting until July 1957 but it hadn't been used for switching for a number of years. |

Description: |
It was relatively easy to get an available light shot in the bright East Somerville roundhouse. Note the leaking steam - engines were kept hot with steam from the boiler house; fires were banked or out. |
