PRR 4-4-0 #1035 |
Description: |
Beautiful original photo of an Altoona built 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive. On#the back of the photo it lists this as a 1905 (D16sb class) as the build date but online sources point more to 1907-14. Nevertheless, the unknown photographer captured a great example of an early locomotive. With Mark Coles' help (see comment below), this loco was built as a class D16b in December 1905 by the PRR's Juniata Shops in Altoona. She was converted to class D16sb in October 1915 in the PRR's!Trenton Shops. You can see a picture of her surviving Builders Plates and Numberplate here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lrmyers/16649708649/in/album-72157649056433924/. |

PRR 4-4-0 #1223 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
This former PRR American type locomotive was built by the Altoona shops has a "birth" date of 11/8/1905 (serial #1399). It had 68" drivers, 20.5"x26" cylinders and could generate 175 psi of boiler pressure. The tractive effort of this early locomotive was a limiting 23,900 lb as cars and trains got heavier. Taken by Laurence Bree Walker at the Strasburg Rail Road where it was restored, this locomotive served as tourist train power until moving across the street as a static display in the RR Museum of Pennyslvania in 1989 when it couldn't pass the FRA thickness standard without major rebuild. The day in 1960 is approximate. Can anyone tell me what the car is in front of the loco??? |

PRR 1223, 4-4-0, 1963 |
Description: |
SRC-1963. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 11 August 1963. Shown here is PRR engine #1223, a D-16SB (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata during November of 1905. In this photo, it is being examined thoroughly by a host of children and other souls. In later years, #1223 pulled excursions under live steam. Nowadays, it is on exhibit at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. |
