TP 2-10-4 #616 - Texas & Pacific |
Description: |
Beautiful roster shot by Harold K. Vollrath of the powerful 2-10-4 "Texas" type steam locomotive built by Lima in 1927 for the Texas & Pacific. Although the ATSF had an experimental 2-10-4 they built, the first mass produced 2-10-4 was for the Texas & Pacific. As a result, Lima refered to this particular wheel configuration as the "Texas" type locomotive in honor of the T&P. The particular wheel diameter size coupled with massive rods adn valve gears caused counter-balance problems that made the early 2-10-4's ride rough but they made up for it with much improved tractive effort. Specs - class I-1a, serial #7243, 63" drivers, 255 psi boiler pressure, 29x32" cyldinders, engine weight of 452,000 lb, impressive tractive effrort of 92,590 lb |

C&O 2-10-4 #3035 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR |
Description: |
Nice looking 1930 Lima built Texas type 2-10-4 locomotive sitting in the Russell, KY, yard approximately a year after being delivered for heavy service between Russell, KY, and Toledo, OH. According to www.steamlocomotive. com "The Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad designed a new Class of freight locomotive to satisfy its needs for motive power. They tested an Erie Berkshire then basically stretched the Erie design adding one set of drivers, creating a 2-10-4 that was both powerful and fast. The C&O ordered forty of it new design "Texas" type locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works in 1930. These locomotives were designated as Class T-1 and were assigned road number 3000 through number 3039. They had 69" diameter drivers, 29" x 34" cylinders, a 265 psi boiler pressure, exerted 93,345 pounds of tractive effort and each weighed 566,000 pounds. The locomotives were equipped with a trailing truck booster that exerted 15,275 pounds of tractive effort. This basic design was used for most 2-10-4s constructed after 1930." R.W. Legg photo |
