PRR 2-8-0 #1 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:
This 1892 Burnham, Wms & Co steam locomotive looks resplendent in the photo - with the sign in front, it must have been part of a display. This was a class 1 (or 3685) loco with small 50" drivers. It could develop a boiler pressure of 175 psi for its 24"x28" cylninders and had an engine weight of 150,000 lb. It could apply a modest tractive effort of 24,363 lb. The day in 1936 is approximate. Partial Caption: "The Road's 1-Spot is of the 2-8-0 wheel arrangement." Correction #1 ~> Omitted are the specifications for E-3SD (4-4-2) "Atlantics": 22x26-inch cylinders; 80-inch drivers; 195 pounds of boiler pressure; 55.5 square feet of grate area; 2,041 square feet of heating surface; 412 square feet of superheating surface; 127,200 pounds, weight on drivers; 196,600 pounds, total weight; as well as 26,072 pounds of tractive effort. Correction #2 ~> The tractive effort of the K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" class is actually 54,675 pounds, not "64,675."

PRR Passenger Station Wreck, #1 of 2, 1899
Description:
iStation. Here is the first of two images of photos by unidentified photographers taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 21 December 1899. Shown here is the carnage of a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train that derailed near the Passenger Station. The train lost its brakes while descending the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains, jumped the tracks near 14th Street, and demolished another freight on an adjacent track. Several PRR men died in the process. Here, PRR engine #1280 assists in the recovery effort; it's an H-3 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1888 and retired in July of 1913 after 25 years of service. The Station's trainshed is at the right; discernable through the haze is the cathedral-like Middle Roundhouse. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge. William E. Burket Collection.

"Power To Burn," Page 68, 1976
Description:
Here is page 68 of a 96-page monograph entitled "Power To Burn: Smoke, Steam, & Cinders" that was edited by James M. Shafer and published during 1976. Photo Caption: "A PRR wreck at New Portage Junction near Wye Switches, Duncansville, involved seven locomotives. This was the first wreck in which automobiles, en route to dealers, were destroyed. It occurred Nov. 6, 1916." In an article published in a November 1966 issue of the "Altoona Mirror," it's stated that "It was 50 years ago, Nov. 6, 1916, that [this] disastrous freight wreck occurred near the Wye Switches at Duncansville. An eastbound freight train, No. 2736, went out of control descending the New Portage Branch from Gallitzin to Hollidaysburg and ran away to crash into four engines ~ Nos. 2477, 2759, 2665, and 971 ~ standing near the Wye Switches. Seven trainmen were killed in the wreck." Note the steam-powered derrick at work on the right.
