RDG 2-8-0 #939 Camelback - Philadelphia & Reading |
Description: |
Here is an interesting looking camelback built by the Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) back in 1887. Small 50" drivers and only producing 150 psi boiler pressure severly limited this loco's power. Most in this class were scrapped in the 'teens. The date is approximate. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

RDG 2-8-0 #946 Camelback - Philadelphia & Reading |
Description: |
Here's a good looking 1888 Burnham, Wms & Co built camelback still ready to work. Most of these small driver, low boiler pressure camelbacks were scrapped in the 'teens but a few did last into the 1920's. The date is approximate. Forrest W. Trittenbach receives the photo credit. |

RDG 2-8-0 #959 Camelback - Philadelphia & Reading |
Description: |
The fireman stands ready and waiting for the engineer to signal. This is another good looking camelback - if you don't mind the "Beauty-and-the-Beast" appearance. Small 50.5" drivers and producing 175 psi boiler pressure with a tractive effort of only 22,399 lb limited its usefulness as the cars and trains grew in length and weight. The location listed on the back of the photo was Mine Hill Junction - not familiar with the area but think it is near Cressona. Can anyone verify this? No photographer was listed. |

Reading "Mother Hubbard" or "Camelback" |
Description: |
A Reading wreck train or "relief train" as Reading called them sits in a siding in Skillman. Reading No. 1588 was built as a Class I-8b 2-8-0 by the Reading itself in 1912. As built, it was configured pretty much as shown in the photos, with center cab, piston valves and Walschaerts valve gear. It was saturated as built, but was converted to superheat in 1919 and reclassified as an I-8sb. It was off the roster by 1948. To the right are two non-revenue cars. The further one from camera is rebuilt from a gondola while the closer is an old truss-rod coach. |
