SP 4-10-2 #5000 - Souther Pacific
Title:  SP 4-10-2 #5000 - Souther Pacific
Description:  Massive example of a 1925 Alco-Schenectady oil burning locomotive built for the Southern Pacific. Specifics - class SP-1, 63.5" drivers, 225 psi boilier pressure, 25x32" outside cylinders (2), 25x28" inside cylinders, engine weight 445,000 lb, tractive effort of 86,589 lb. Drury (1993) notes that they were too rigid for the curves snaking through the Donner Pass, where they were first tried. After relocation to the Sunset Route east of Los Angeles, the 4-10-2s ran until the mid-1950s. It is there - between Roseville and Summit, Calif on a 2 1/2%, 80-mile grade - "...the engines were remarkably successful because the operating condtions prevented excessive speeds and the even torque of the three cylinders prevented undue stalling at low speeds." No exact date, location or photographer was listed.

SP 4-10-2 #5005 - Southern Pacific
Title:  SP 4-10-2 #5005 - Southern Pacific
Description:  The fireman of this 1925 Alco-Schenectady built "Overland-type" (or better known as "Southern Pacific-type") locomotive looks ready to pull out with its freight in tow from an unidentified yard, possibly Roseville, CA. Specifics - SP-1 class, 63.5" drivers, oil burner, generated a boiler pressure of 225 psi for its three sets of cylinders, an engine weight of 445,000 lb and produced a tractive effort of 86,589 lb. According to several resources, the locomotive was an excellent performer at speeds between 30-35 mph but suffered maintenance problems at higher speeds and too rigid to perform well on the sinuous curves of Donner pass, but excelled on the Sunset Route east of LA. Date and location are approximations. No photogrpaher listed.

SP 4-10-2 #5023 - Southern Pacific
Title:  SP 4-10-2 #5023 - Southern Pacific
Description:  Unique 3 cylinder and 4-10-2 wheel configuration makes this a rare locomotive. Only SP and UP tried this model - successful for SP (who called it a Southern Pacific type) but not for UP (who called it an Overland type). SP 4-10-2 #5023 was built by ALCo-Schenectady in May of 1926 (serial #66795). After nearly 27 years of service, the loco was "vacated "in November of 1953 and scrapped a month later at the Sacramento Shops. Specs - oil burner, 63" drivers, impressive 225 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" and 28x32" cylinders, engine weight of 445,000 lb, tractive effort of 84,200 lb. Arthur B Johnson photo
