RDG 614 "The Crusader" |
Description: |
A streamlined Pacific GS1sas leads The Crusader, train #614 (the afternoon eastbound) past the Skillman depot. I'm told by a fellow who enhanced the pic that this is the #117. In 1947, the Crusader ran twice a day between Philadelphia and Jersey City. The trainset has an observation car on either end. The eastbound side is now tucked into an extention off the tender. In JC, the engine will be turned and placed on the other end, but the rest of the trainset is not turned. |

RDG 4-6-2 #217 - Reading Co |
Description: |
Great action shot of Reading 4-6-2 #217 heading up a crack varnish with baggage cars and four passenger cars. Built by the Reading's own shops in June of 1948 (no serial number), the idea that Reading was investing in steam this late in the game definitely points to a need for power to pull the passenger service as older 4-6-2's were retired. Unfortunately, the loco and its entire class barely completed 9 years of service, they were retired in June of 1957. Specs - G3 class, 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 329,450 lb, tractive effort of 48,344 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so "guess-timations" were used. |

L&N Train No. 12 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 253 was leading train number 12 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Chartres Street. Number 12 was the daily-except-Sunday commuter run to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The train had a 5:15 PM departure from Canal Street Station, and it was just a few minutes into its 2-hour-20-minute trip. The train's first car is in the new (post-war) blue paint scheme, while the other cars are in the older green scheme. At this time, the L&N had five tracks on the median of Elysian Fields from the Mississippi River to Tonti Street. The two tracks on the right previously belonged to the Pontchartrain Railroad. Mississippi River wharves are visible beyond the crossing tower at Decatur Street. The 253 was one of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1921 and retired on 16 October 1951. (approximate day of photo) |

L&N Train No. 12 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 263 brings Ocean Springs commuter train No. 12 across Canal Street. The train is dead-heading from Julia Street Yard into Canal Street Station where it will load passengers for its 5:15 P.M. departure. The 263 was the last of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1922 and retired on 7 July 1953. On 27 July 1951, just one month after this photo was taken, train No. 12 was officially dieselized with new FP7's.This photo was taken from the pedestrian walkway to the Mississippi River ferry landing, just off to the left. The two tracks on the left are the New Orleans Public Belt main lines, the three tracks in the middle belong to the L&N, and the tracks on the right – on Delta Street – belong to the Southern Pacific. SRT804RKB |
Description: |
Brightly painted but in a state of disrepair SRT [then known as RSR-Royal State Railways [of Siam}] Pacific No. 804 is another static display at Kwai bridge. This lady was originally from the Federated Malay Railways and of British manufacture; thus its distinctly European look. A broken cab window gives the apperence of the Engineer's ghost looking to the line ahead... |

SRT 824 |
Description: |
December 5th. is the King of Thailand's birthday, and every year the SRT will run its special service in observation. Here the 824 is all decked out for the occasion and taking a breather at Makkasan before rolling on to the next stop. Barely visible behind 824 is another preserved steamer making this a double header. Thai practice seems to be to put double headers back to back which is handy for bi directional operations. This is a Pacific type engine built in Japan after WW2, 1949, I think! |

SRT 850, 824 Rgst |
Description: |
SRT pacific No. 850 passes under an inactive set of giant 'Rabbit ear' signals with a private charter excursion ahead of impending rain. This is the first time we catch her leading, usually sister 824 [trailing] is doing the honours. She is in enviously fine form here! It is customary for the SRT to doublehead steam excursions back to back as there are no places to turn the engines enroute. |
