A photo to document what it used to look like in Chessie System paint. Built in July 1956 in Indiana as B&O C2891. Class I-17A bay window caboose. It has since been painted red by a variety of local groups and will be used for a welcome center on the Great Allegheny Passage-Youghiogheny River Trail. It has also now been placed onto a railroad track. The wiring conduit and posts on the roof are from when it was being used as a tourism center at another location in Connellsville. |

Seen on an early morning in the dead of winter, after a significant snowfall the previous night. The caboose is at the former site of a P&LE rail yard. Now it's next to the Youghiogheny River Trail-Great Allegheny Passage. According to research this was built at a B&O railyard in Indiana in July 1956. It is a Class I-17A bay-window caboose. In fall 2011 this was fortunately restored and painted B&O red by a variety of local groups. |

A caboose in transition |

B&O 902891 in Chessie System paint exists no more. And in a way that will be a positive thing. A collaboration of various local groups in Connellsville is restoring this and painting it in B&O red. On the right you can see a stack of railroad ties donated by CSX so that it will be able to rest on rails once again. This caboose sits on land that once was a P&LE railyard until the early 90s. Now this is a trailhead for the Great Allegheny Passage/Youghiogheny River Trail in Connellsville. The caboose will be a long-overdue welcome center for trail users. Groups involved in this restoration project include CSX, Stone and Company, Pizza King, Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center, Connellsville City, HObo Model Railroad Club, Yough River Trail Council, and various local individuals. |

Due to a stretch of nice weather, the painting and restoration of this caboose in Connellsville has been going very smoothly. Eventually , the stenciling of the letters and numbers will be added by the Connellsville HObo model railroad club. I'm told the B&O logo stencils are being lent to them by the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore. The poles on the top are for a welcome center sign to be installed. Sanding, rust repair, and primer on this caboose was done courtesy of the Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center students. Then the students painted it B&O red, assisted by Vern Ohler of the Connellsville Street Department. Local CSX roadmaster Gerry Gable donated the spikes, ties, and railplates. CSX employee Shawn Lowery helped with building the rails. Local business Painters choice donated paint, primer, and body filler. Stone and Company donated wood for the interior, which is being refinished by local retired carpenter Dave Stupka and his son Dave Jr. Local artists Laura Koposko and Jessica Lotman will be painting signs and murals to be hung on the caboose. The caboose is at the former site of a P&LE rail yard. Now its next to the Youghiogheny River Trail-Great Allegheny Passage. According to research this was built at a B&O railyard in Indiana in July 1956. It is a Class I-17A bay-window caboose. Built as B&O C2891.
