Here is the fifth of six original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken just East of the Coaling Tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Shown here is the tender coal bunker of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6700, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during March of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in March of 1944, and retired in June of 1957 after 27 years of faithful service. The severely-sloped sides imply the presence of a mechanical stoker. |
