Here is an original photo by Douglas C. Jones that was taken just East of the Coaling Tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6726, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during May of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in October of 1948, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. Note that its valve gear has been removed in preparation for movement to the Recycling Center. Partially visible in the background is the Westbound Receiving Yard. |
