This was the Burlington Northern’s former Frisco yard at York, Alabama about 4½ years after the SLSF merger, with the yard office still painted in the distinctive color which the Frisco used on these metal buildings. At York the Alabama, Tennessee & Northern line between Reform and Mobile crossed over the Alabama Great Southern line between Birmingham and Meridian. The AT&N eventually became a part of the Frisco, while the AGS was acquired by the Southern Railway. In 1973 the Frisco swing bridge over the Tombigbee River at Cochran, 45 miles north of York, collapsed; so SLSF trains going to and from Mobile began operating over the Southern between Boligee and York. The SLSF north of York was abandoned in 1978-79, and the Frisco became a part of the BN in 1980. |
