| Here is the first of two frames of a one-and-a-third page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Centenary." It was published originally in the 1 November 1954 issue of "Life" magazine, pages 36-37. Partial Caption: "The most famous railroad curve in the U.S. celebrated the 100th anniversary of its opening last week by sitting for a spectacular nighttime portrait." The photographer is not identified. In the foreground is a westbound Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train powered by engine #5862, an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in February of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service. |
