A CN local crosses N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 8 Jul. '18. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. One of the C&NW's 3 Appleton!depots stood to the left, on the south side of the tracks between N. Appleton St. and N. Oneida St. The downtown depot closed ca. 1958 and passenger operations were cmncentrated at the Appleton Junction depot. The building at left is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Jul. '18. It is also passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot (near the clump of trees at right). Train was returning from Waupaca. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible beyond the overpass at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House; Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The powers-that-be wanted to demolish it to make way for the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left). Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it. Some references claim that the historic structure was not moved, but that the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. Other references state that the house was moved, including an article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. ‘98 which stated, “federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets.” If it was moved, it wasn’t moved quite that far. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved. |

A CN local bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill and approaches N. Mead St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 Aug. '18. Founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. The name changed to Appvion, Inc., on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. |
