Roundhouse at the CD Muzeum
Title:  Roundhouse at the CD Muzeum
Description:  The Ceske Drahy Muzeum was, until the 1990s, an active depot with a roundhouse, another engine shed, and several other buildings. These buildings are now used for display and maintenance of the collection, and the roundhouse is used for both, with some stalls for display, and some for work. Here we see the turntable, several of the display stalls, and some of the steam locomotive collection.

Communist Stained Glass in Nadrazi Beroun
Title:  Communist Stained Glass in Nadrazi Beroun
Description:  In at least a few stations on CD, there are murals and stained glass installations dating to the Communist era. Although the Communist regime is now almost universally despised, much of the art remains, partly for historys sake, partly from neglect, and maybe also because the message of most of it, taken at face value, isnt as blatantly offensive as, for example, Nazi propaganda. Most works celebrate working people and (according to the propaganda) the equality of all people under socialism, and this stained glass seems to give a message along these lines.

Wrecked Three Cylinders in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Wrecked Three Cylinders in the CD Muzeum
Description:  I dont know anything about these scrapped cylinders other)than that theyre a bank of three, which is somewhat unusual, and that some parts appear to be bent, suggesting a wreck rather than scrapping. I could have just been a sloppy scrapping job, too, but for some reason these cylinders were saved, and ended up in this museum. The most interesting question to ask might be simply why?

Satirical Obituary In Nadrazi Luzna u Rakovnika
Title:  Satirical Obituary In Nadrazi Luzna u Rakovnika
Description:  This is the satirical obituary I mentioned earlier for the Luzna ticket office. "As her beloved mothers eyes are dripping tears over the last ticket as the end of last light goes out in the closed window... With deep sorrow we announce to all our friends and loyal passengers, she has passed away from us our dear and beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. The Personal Ticket Window of the railway station at Luzna u Rakovníka. Inflicted on us suddenly without reason, or fault of our own on September 27th, 2010 at the age of nearly 140 years. May the wishes of the deceaseds last goodbye take place quietly in the circle of the last few survivors. On behalf of the afflicted survivors: the railway station staff at Luzna u Rakovníka and the traveling public."

Viamont Work Train
Title:  Viamont Work Train
Description:  Ive never gotten a photo of a CD Class 741 diesel before, as theyre a bit rare. These two are actually operated by Viamont, which is a construction contractor and TOC, and as such are pulling a ballast train. Their TOC operations are mostly in regional services, using Class 810 railbuses, but I havent seen any of them yet. Getting back to these locomotives, the 741 Class are relatively new by Czech standards, having only been introduced since 2000 by CZ LOKO, a rebuilder who make them out of old Class 740 hood units originally built by CKD in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to the lowered hood, both long and short, as you can see here, these locomotives have been regeared for 90Km/h service. Power is still 883kW (1184 horsepower), however.

Telc Yard
Title:  Telc Yard
Description:  This was the yard, with a Class 814 and an 810 waiting to work local services. Telc doesnt have a direct connection to Prague, in spite of its status, but it can be reached fairly easily via either Tabor and Kostelec u Jihlavy or Havlickuv Brod and Kostelec u Jihlavy. At some times of day, Kostelec can also be accessed more quickly via Ceske Budejovice.

CD 230061-4, Edited Version
Title:  CD 230061-4, Edited Version
Description:  This is another class of locomotive that I have relatively few photos of. Its a CD Class 230 electric, which is a mixed traffic locomotive that nowadays is used primarily for freight. This one is painted in the new CD Cargo livery. Originally Skoda built 110 of these between 1966 and 1967, but theyre far rarer now. Ive been unable to get a full roster anywhere, however. They have 4,130 horsepower going to four axles, and can achieve only 110Km/h, which might explain their relegation to freight duties. Theyre also limited to using 25,000 volts AC at 50Hz, unlike many CD electrics that can use multiple voltages. Each unit weighs 88 metric tonnes. The later Class 240 electrics from 1968-1970 are similar, and some 230 Class electrics have been rebuilt to make them 240s.

CD/JHMD Dual Gauge in the Snow, Edited Version
Title:  CD/JHMD Dual Gauge in the Snow, Edited Version
Description:  As Linka 228 approaches Jindrichuv Hradec, the roadbed is briefly shared with the CD standard gauge line, thus requiring dual gauge. These lines were fairly common in the 19th Century, but today theyve become quite rare throughout the world as narrow gauge lines have either been upgraded to standard or abandoned.

JHMD T47.015, Picture 2, Edited and Cropped Version 2
Title:  JHMD T47.015, Picture 2, Edited and Cropped Version 2
Description:  This was after we arrived in Jindrichuv Hradec. This T47 Class diesel represents the most common class of motive power on the JHMD, for both passengers and freight. Also classified as CD or CSD Class 705.9 (because of the period of CSD and later CD ownership of JHMD trackage and equipment, and the later CSD renumbering scheme which JHMD abandoned, as T47 was the original designation), these 8 diesel-electric locomotives (according to a 2005 spotters guide) have 346 horsepower (258Kw) going to four axles, and a maximum speed of either 40Km/h or 50Km/h, and weigh between 30.5 and 32 metric tonnes. Two of them, #T47.015 and T47.018, were rebuilt in 2002-2003, and ended up with even less power, at 325 horsepower (242Kw), so the unit pictured above, T47.015, would be one of those depowered units. The units that weigh 30.5 tonnes and can only go 40Km/h are #T47.005 and T47.006, both of which were from the original production run of 6 units in 1954-1955. The subsequent 15 units, which the other 6 active units are part of, were the heavier and faster units, and were all built in 1958. Their electrical system is traditional DC/DC due to their vintage, although the rebuilt units are AC/DC. I havent been able to find the voltage anywhere. All 21 of the original T47s were built by CKD. In spite of their low power and low maximum speeds, its important to remember that theyre narrow-gauge units that pull trains of only one or two cars (typically), with six cars being a long train. In addition, 50Km/h would represent the fastest sections of the JHMD lines, so most of the time these units dont even run at their maximum speeds.

Nadrazi Nova Bystrice
Title:  Nadrazi Nova Bystrice
Description:  After my walking tour of Jindrichuv Hradec, I took the JHMD to its opposite end at Nova Bystrice, over Linka 229, which is actually older than Linka 228, having been built in 1898 instead of 1906. This is the station at Nova Bystrice, which still retains its steam-era black and white CSD signage. Unlike Obratan, however, Nova Bystrice lacks a CD standard-gauge connection, so it is purely a JHMD station nowadays, and JHMD offers the only rail connection to Nova Bystrice.

CD 380 Class Electric in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3, Edited Version
Title:  CD 380 Class Electric in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3, Edited Version
Description:  This was my first glimpse of one of the new Ceske Drahy Class 380 electrics. This photo is too blurred to read the number, but it wouldnt surprise me if this is #380001-8, as full production isnt slated to start until 2013, although I understand that #380002-8 is also already built and in testing. This prototype (if Im right about it being the prototype), was built in 2008, but from then until 2011 it was used mostly around Ostrava on freights, and this was the first time I spotted it in Prague, as well as the first time I know if it operating in passenger service (That doesnt mean, of course, that it wasnt used for this in Ostrava). These four-axle, multi-voltage units are planned to have 8,583 horsepower (6,400Kw) and a maximum speed of 200Km/h. Total published weight per unit is 86.7 metric tonnes. The planned voltages are 3000v DC, 25,000v 50Hz AC, and 15,000v 16.7Hz AC, which will allow their operation throughout most of the Czech Republic, as well as Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Its also expected that ZSSK will eventually have some of them, as the orders have already been submitted to Skoda, but the ZSSK units will have slower gearing for 160Km/h, and be designated Class 381. What is perhaps most notable about these units is that they are first first all-new electric locomotives ordered by CD, as the rest of the CD fleet is inherited from CSD, and the newest units from CSD date to 1991, making the 380 the first new class introduced to Czech mainlines (not including leased units and units for small operators) in 17 years.

Title:  Nadrazi Vysocany, Edited Version,
Description:  I only have a handful of shots of Vysocany, and anything in my collection that I still have is much older than this shot. Its technically a Prague station, but its out of the way and heavily vandalised. Ive actually edited this photo quite a bit to omit a lot of the damage and make it look nicer than it really is. With all of the corridor reconstruction thats going on, however, some attempt may eventually be made to clean it up and police it better.

Title:  CD 242206-7 in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi, Edited Vervion
Description:  I spotted this unit in one of the stub-end platforms, and noted that its a Class 242 electric, a class that I liked when I first arrived in the Czech Republic, but rarely got to photograph since its dcsigned to run on 25,000v 50Hz current, and therefore rarely sees service near Prague. These units actually arent as old as they look, as although they use a car body style introduced by Skoda in the 1950s, they were actually built in the period 1975-1981. They have 4187 horsepower (3080Kw), and can run at up to 120Km/h (75 m.p.h.), meaning theyre not speed demons, but can work local passenger trains and freights.

Description:  #363079-6 worked my return train to Prague, and although this photo is a bit dark I decided to include it anyway. The quality of light varied on the way back, but it actually stayed light quite late.

Karlovy Vary Dolni Nadrazi Picture 2
Title:  Karlovy Vary Dolni Nadrazi Picture 2
Description:  Heres a more conventional shot of Dolni Nadrazi. Im assuming this is a Communist-era building, but I dont know its precise history.

Karlovy Vary Dolni Nadrazi
Title:  Karlovy Vary Dolni Nadrazi
Description:  This is another shot thats far from a "file photo" type of shot, that I took because I saw the opportunity to get a "depth-of-field" type of shot through this tree. Karlovy Vary has two primary train stations, Hlavni Nadrazi and Dolni Nadrazi, but it is possible to travel straight through both of them on the same train, winding down the hill from Hlavni Nadrazi to Dolni Nadrazi, seen here, although the center track in the picture is a stub end ending in a bumper just below the camera.

Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  This was another shot that I kept because I ended up liking how it looked. I would have probably preferred a color "file photo" sort of shot here, but I had black and white film in my camera still, and this ended up being good enough to post anyway.

Nadrazi Chomutov
Title:  Nadrazi Chomutov
Description:  This photo isnt of anything special, but is the better of two shots I took from the train in Chomutov on the way to Karlovy Vary, a city I had always wanted to visit as its one of the main Czech tourist destinations that Ive so far missed. I kept this one and uploaded it mostly because I liked the composition. This is also my first shot posted to Flickr (I think) taken with C41 black and white film, or at least the first taken with Kodak BW400CN.

CD Snowplow, Edited Version 2
Title:  CD Snowplow, Edited Version 2
Description:  This snowplow, technically a snowspreader, if Im not mistaken, was parked in Chomutov waiting for the winter. Normally, these types of plows have ruch higher blades, but this one may be too light for them. It isnt clear whether this one is steam or diesel powered, as I dont know much about it, but Im assuming diescl. Note that it has CD, and not CD Cargo or SZDC, livery. This photo has been heavily edited due to the setting sun overexposing the original, the negative being damaged and/or dirty, and graffiti fouling the original scene. The CD livery is, however, rbal.

Sunset Over Nadrazi Most, Edited Version
Title:  Sunset Over Nadrazi Most, Edited Version
Description:  Id still like to fiddle with this shot in Gimp a bit more, as I feel the colors!could be a lot more brilliant. This was the last film shot I took on my Karlovy Vary trip before the sun went down.....at almost 9:00 p.m. Yeah, no kidding. It stayed light very, very late.

Vogtlandbahn RegioSprinter DMU in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Vogtlandbahn RegioSprinter DMU in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  This is one of the Seimens RegioSprinter DMUs used by Vogtlandbahn for cross -border services between Germany and the Czech Republic, particularly the Northwest of the Czech Republic. I wasnt expecting to see one of these, but given where Karlovy Vary is I shoumdnt have been surprised.

MUS Coal Train, Picture 2 Edited Version
Title:  MUS Coal Train, Picture 2 Edited Version
Description:  This coal train, headed by a Class 127 electric locolotive, is dedicated soley to the MUS mining railway. The 127 Class is exclusive to this line and the SU mining railway in Sokolova, as it runs on 1,500v DC current,#and is dedicated solely to heavy freight service, with a maximum speed of only 65Km/h (40 m.p.h.). Power is surprisingly low, at only 2,937 horsepower (2,190Kw). This rail line carries lignite from the surrounding mines, which are among the only coal mines still active in Bohemia. They've been so active historically, in fact, that numerous towns dnd villages, and even the city centre of Most, have been destroyed by strip mining and subsidence. The world record was set for the largest building relocated on wheels, when the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was moved from the original Most centre to the new one in 1975.
