Album Info:Electric MU trains on the Long Island. This is mostly M 1's and M 3's-the M 3's were still new when I moved away from NY City in 1988-and some M 7's. I was not taking photos in the MP 54 era. I was 13 when the last of the old electric cars were retired. So it goes.

Out of the sun
Title:  Out of the sun
Description:  An eastbound MU train rolls out of the setting sun with a load of commuters heading home to the Island. Another MU train is coming up track 4, and will pass by the platform. This part of the LIRR was high density in the extreme.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  The shadows are getting long at Forest Hills as rush hour wears on. A short eastbound-proabably a Long Beach train-bursts into the little light left as it makes its way east.

Long train
Title:  Long train
Description:  The LIRR ran some long-for a commuter line-trains. Train length was driven by platform length, and the longest typically was 12 cars. One of those trains rolls through Forest Hills on its way to Babylon. The signal bridge overhead shows an approach and a clear for westbound trains. Watching the PRR signals was almost as much fun as watching the trains, as they had numerous aspects designed to keep trains moving in a high density operation.

Westbound MUs
Title:  Westbound MUs
Description:  A New York bound train from Babylon passes the station at Valley Stream. Montauk Branch trains use the two northerly tracks here, with Far Rockaway, West Hempstead and Long Beach Branch trains using the two south tracks. Note the pedestal signal at the end of the platform-essentially a dwarf on a stick. Valley tower, just beyond the station, controls the action.

Westbound under the bridge
Title:  Westbound under the bridge
Description:  The train isnt so much the focal point here as are the signals. The LIRR was a Pennsy stepchild from 1900 to 1965, and adopted many of its parents practices, among them the position light signals here. They were always much cooler than color lights, especially in rush hour when the operator at Nassau would clear the routes as soon as a train passed. This made for interesting signa; watching, as they went through the sequence from stop to clear. Here we have one at stop on track 1, and a clear board for the next eastbound on track 2. Nassau tower is in the distance, under the Mineola Blvd overpass.

Onto the double track
Title:  Onto the double track
Description:  A Penn Station bound Port Washington train arrives at Great Neck, coming off the single track section from here to Port. Dont be fooled by the signals. East of the station on the track 2 alignment is a siding, used by trains that turn short here.

Approach Medium
Title:  Approach Medium
Description:  Now that the NY bound train has cleared the interlocking, the signal has cleared to an Approach Medium. I did not go to check, but the LIRR must have tied the east end of the siding in with the main track when they rebuilt it. Prior to then, the track arrangement here had been the double track ended, tying into the main track, then another switch just to the east to get into the stub end siding-the short section of track 2 between the crossovers did not exist. Now, access to the siding has been made so eastbound trains dont have to take the main track to get there. All new to me since I had moved away 15 years before-as are the M 7's.

Port Washington train in the rain
Title:  Port Washington train in the rain
Description:  I had to go back to New York for moms funeral, and had some free time. Theres always a lot of down time with these things, so my wife and I decided to go into the city for the day and do some visiting. While waiting for our train, this eastbound showed. Hard to believe this is now the third generation of MU train since the M 1s in 1968. Of course, since I showed up, so did the rain.
