Though many comrades have fallen, this wigwag soldiers on into 2015
Title:  Though many comrades have fallen, this wigwag soldiers on into 2015
Description:  Vine Street in Baraboo is the last wigwag crossing left on the WSOR Southern Division. There are two crossings (three signals total) in Plymouth on the Northern Division, last I knew. UP has one pair left on their Shoreline Sub in Sheboygan, and that's all she wrote. It's a testament to how common these signals once were on C&NW (and Milwaukee Road) lines through Wisconsin that there are still a few left.

Stop on Red Signal
Title:  Stop on Red Signal
Description:  The Wood Street crossing in Spring Green has "Stop on Red Signal" signs below the lights. These are required by law in Michigan, but quite unusual elsewhere in modern times. In Wisconsin, there are 1-2 other crossings on the Prairie Sub that have them, 2 on spur tracks in Green Bay and 1-2 on the CN main south of Waukesha at last check.

Searchlights and crossovers
Title:  Searchlights and crossovers
Description:  UP Geneva Sub MP 55. Wasted an afternoon and a lot of gas (and a toll) trying to get the UP heritage unit pair on IG2G2 after work, but they'd already gone back east. Decided I might as well grab a shot of one of the few sets of searchlight signals remaining on this line.

Title:  Searchlight serving as the SB distant signal for the CN diamond on the UP Chippewa Falls Sub

The Saemann Avenue crossing, looking west
Title:  The Saemann Avenue crossing, looking west
Description:  These are the last wigwag type crossing signals left in active service in Wisconsin, and possibly in the country. A UP maintainer soon drove up and tested the wigwags. He told me I'd missed the train, which ran earlier on this day than it typically does (go figure), but at least I got some video of the wigwags swinging anyway.

Odd bidirectional GRS searchlight near the depot, looking south (RR east)
Title:  Odd bidirectional GRS searchlight near the depot, looking south (RR east)
Description:  I was curious about why this was here, as the ex-C&NW trackage west/north of the UP yard in Janesville has been dark territory for many decades. I speculated it might be a crossing activation indicator for the nearby Main Street crossing, but I've been told it's just a display piece to go with the depot.

Abandoned ex-MILW searchlight signals
Title:  Abandoned ex-MILW searchlight signals
Description:  In the Internet age, it's not often that extant railroad relics previously unknown to the wider railfan community are "discovered," but this seems to be one such case. At least I personally had no idea that these were here until someone posted a similar photo to a Facebook group a couple weeks ago. This is on the former Milwaukee Road line between Janesville and Milton, which was mostly abandoned between Jackson Street and the location known as Anderson, where it crossed over the C&NW's line to Fond du Lac, following a washout in 1989. Then-operator Wisconsin & Calumet secured trackage rights over the C&NW to cover that section, an arrangement which continues today under WSOR/UP. This short section north of Memorial Drive was kept in as a spur, which UP mostly kept full of stored freight cars. Those were pulled a couple of weeks ago, which along with some brush cutting revealed these long-lost survivors.

Look through the back of the gutted southbound signal
Title:  Look through the back of the gutted southbound signal
Description:  The ex-MILW secondary lines in southern Wisconsin that formed the WICT/WSOR system have been dark territory for so long, it's easy to forget that they were ever anything but. At least one set of these in similar decrepit condition remained standing on the "J-Line" (Fox Lake Sub) into the WICT era, but those were long gone by the time I took up railfanning.

Back view of the abandoned northbound signal
Title:  Back view of the abandoned northbound signal
Description:  These are US&S signals. Through the trees, the ex-C&NW trackage now used by both WSOR (which returns to ex-Mllwaukee Road trackage at Anderson) and UP (which serves a few industries near Highway 14, the ex-C&NW line to Fond du Lac is abandoned from there to Fort Atkinson, where trackage resumes as the Clyman Sub) is visible.
