On the other side of town
Title:  On the other side of town
Description:  The big show in Waterloo was the Chicago Central & Pacific, which was quite busy the day I was there. On my way out toward Mason City, I caught this Iowa Northern train, doing its best to impersonate a BN local. IANR would later have a very attractive scheme, but for now, it was a pair of BN geeps to work its piece of the ex Rock. ***UPDATE for early 2024*** CN is acquiring the IANR, so that road will now become a fallen flag.

Rare bird
Title:  Rare bird
Description:  This C 415 was in the yard at Nekoosa Paper. It looks like it might still be a working unit, though I did not see it running while I was there. Only 26 of these were built, so finding it was a real catch. This looks like one of the ex SP units, judging by cab height and the light package.

New paint
Title:  New paint
Description:  The Rochester & Southern was still a new operation in 1987, having taken over the B&Os former Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh lines from CSX. The power was painted in a scheme that was modified from parent Genesee & Wyomings original paint diagram, and would become well known in the short line world as G&W acquired more lines. Here we see R&S 105 in its new dress at Brooks Av yard in Rochester.

Awaiting rebirth.
Title:  Awaiting rebirth.
Description:  TP&W 801 sits outside the M&E shop, its front pilot removed. M&E acquired both TP&W C 424's, putting them into service as their 18 and 19 once they had gotten some attention at the shop. In an era where Alcos were dropping rapidly, it was good to see a couple back on the road. Jersey was a good place to be in that regard at the time. NYSW had also returned a number of them to the ranks of the living, including five C 430's, out of only 16 built.

Trailing is a GP 40 in the new R&S paint scheme, based on parent Genesee & Wyomings colors. It is a scheme that will become familiar nationwide as G&W builds its short line empire.

Description:  If one can consider a PC gon a classic. GE Railcar operated a contract repair shop in the old LV facility in Sayre PA. Aside from having this SW 1, it also took old cars in as fodder for rehab, and it was not uncommon to see some fallen flags, such as this PC gondola.

Rochester & Southern power
Title:  Rochester & Southern power
Description:  Often my train chases would take me as far as Silver Springs, about 135 miles from my house. It was a good location, and mostly an easy chase to that point. West of there, it was slow going, so I usually quit there. Sometimes R&S would have a unit or two there, such as this day when I caught a pair of hand me downs while waiting for a train on the Soutnern Tier Line.
