NJT Morrisville S&I - photo 1 of 50 |
Description: |
I had the pleasure of working for a sub-contractor during the final construction phase of the NJT Morrisville Service & Inspection (S&I) facility during the fall/winter of 2007 and January of 2008. The S&I facility is the large white building. Although I took a couple hundred photos, this one is not mine - not sure where it came from, but it's good place to start. It probably dates from 2005 or 2006, since it's in the middle of construction. The tower/office/crew facility is to the right and under construction. The "trailer park" (lower right corner) all belonged to the various contractors (non-NJT folks). (I sat in one of those buildings for a while.) The road into the facility (bottom) remains today as do the areas for employee parking. The yard itself appears to be in use in this photo - not sure if it is was fully electrified at the time. The S&I facility (big white building) appears to be well underway. The "bulge" to the right houses the wheel truing equipment (ground level) and offices (upper level). The long portion (about 1/4 mile in length) houses tracks 1 & 2. The length allows service and inspection to be performed on two 14(?) car train sets simultaneously. (I think the number is 14...) The track in the upper left corner belongs to NS (ex-CR, PC, PRR I believe) and circumvents the NJT yard. Remarkably, NS did not connect directly to the NJT yard, even though the NS yard is just out of sight in the upper right hand corner - all the NJT tracks just gathered up in a couple of stubs and that was it. |

Here we see one of the electrical contractor's employees preparing the wiring for the eventual arrival of the derail machine for Track 2 at the east end. If memory serves, I *think* this derail may have been re-positioned later to the opposite rail. All the derail equipment is bi-directional with the exception of the connecting rods - they must be ordered in near rail or far rail lengths. Note: The large gray wire strung along the tie is a grounding conductor and has nothing to do with the derail wiring. |

There are two mobile gantries on the upper level - one at the east end and one at the west end. As far as I know, they are not used in "normal" cleaning, servicing, inspecting, etc., activities (normal being the operative word), but are used to access the tops of locomotives as needed. If used, it is required the main (inside) catenary be in a de-energized state. This is the view from the west gantry looking to the east. The east doors are almost the full 1/4 mile away. |

From the east end, looking to the east. The S&I facility is behind me. The NJT train on the left is departing the yard and heading out to the main (NEC), about a mile or so away. The NS is on the other side of the fence way over on the right. The NS lower track hugs the NJT and also joins the NEC. The NS upper track curves up and away to the right and heads to the steel mill. The light tower (inoperative) is a holdover from the old yard (PRR vintage?). |

Description: |
This is the schedule as of the last week of December 2007, with the timeline of events leading up to the formal turnover of the facility to NJT in 2008, as shown on our whiteboard in one of the construction trailers. On January 2, NJT workers came in to turn on the high voltage (12kV 25Hz). On the next day, they made the connections to provide a step-down feed for the interlock system to monitor (PT is shorthand for potential transformer). On the 3rd and the 7th, final settings, adjustments, etc. were made for the four derails. The NJT wire train came into the new shop (both tracks) to check clearances on the 8th. By this time, permanent NJT staff had started to show up and initial training was held on the 9th. The 10th was a catch-all date, the 11th a formal demo for NJT management, and after that the keys to the kingdom were handed over. |

The derails, doors, catenary, gantries, cranes and various associates gates, platforms, etc. are interlocked (mechanically and electrically) as to not permit inadvertent operation. For example, the interlock system prevents closing a train door on a live buffer. One of the parts of the interlock system is shown here. Railroaders invariably name things, and these cages become to be known as "lobster pots". |

Typical derail arrangement, this one at the east end. The gray box contains the motorized derail mechanism. The hump-shaped black box at the top of the photo is the switch circuit controller, which provides position feedback to the interlock system, i.e., derail position (mechanically, advanced or retracted) gets converted into electrical signals. The square black box at the bottom is the underground path for electrical wiring back into the facility. Warning! When you order 1000 ft. of wire, make sure you specify (qty. 4) 250 ft. spools are not acceptable! |

4206 and the wire train in the S&I facility, on track 2. At this point, it is interesting to note the aluminum upside-down U-shaped guard rails on either side and spanning the length of the upper platform. All are relatively light and removable. Why so many instead of just two very long ones? The working height of the upper platform (relative to top of rail) is roughly what you would expect to find at a passenger station. When a train set enters the building, it doesn't necessarily stop at the same point all the time. After the train stops, the passenger doors open and the blue flags are lit. The cleaners remove (lift up) whatever individual guard rail is directly opposite an open passenger door, set it aside, enter the train, do their thing, exit the train and restore the guard rail. Pretty simple, huh? |

As 4206 crept in, it didn't take long to find an interference. Unlike the removable U-shaped guard rails on the upper platform, the yellow painted ones are just the basic steel in concrete varieties. The white hat is standing at roughly ground level and you can see the gently sloped ramps up and down to the inspection areas. The "red pipes" hanging from the ceiling are the sanders. |

This is the lower level view of the wire train. During normal operation with the passenger train sets, this would be the regular hangout for the car knockers - they do their running gear inspections (brakes, wheels, etc.) with pretty much everything at eye level. Notice also the red (unlit), green and blue globe lights all over the place. The red lights flash (strobe) when the main (inside) catenary is energized. The green lights (when illuminated) indicate the main (inside) catenary is off and the blue lights provide the blue flag indication. The combination illustrated here (red off, green on, blue on) is the "go to work" signal for the S&I staff. |

NJT 4206 has the honor of leading the first train into the new shop. The wire train now has all its inspection personnel aboard, moved over to Track 2 (the west end) and is about to enter the building. It is worth noting again the catenary circuits for both Track 1 and Track 2 are divided into sections: the circuits outside the S&I facility are controlled elsewhere (at some master desk, I presume). The main (inside) catenary and the two buffer catenaries (one at each end of the building through the train doors) are controlled by the operators in the S&I facility. The buffer catenaries are interlocked such that the each buffer can be energized only when its respective train doors are fully opened - and - the train doors cannot be closed once the buffer is energized. In this photo, you can spot the breaks in the catenaries on both tracks - the sections heading into the building are the buffers. |

NS and SMS crews met for interchange 2 or 3 times a week during the day. There's no siding, so (apparently) it was easier for both to do a "live" interchange and get cars out of the way. NS typically arrived with 2 big GEs, which dwarfed SMS' little Baldwin. A rather incongruous sight watching the two shuffle cars around. |

Another view of the west end Track 2 derail equipment. The wiring looks to be complete, so we're probably close to testing. |

Description: |
When the derail is advanced (applied), this gadget flops up in the air (FWAAANG!!!) and lights up as well. When the derail is eventually retracted, it flops back onto the ground (FWOP!!!) and the light goes off. As you may have guessed, the incandescent bulb didn't last long and was replaced later with an LED version. |
