UP 2000
Title:  UP 2000
Description:  After a good nights rest and breakfast at the Comfort Inn in Cheyenne, we began to make our way northward. Before heading out of town completely, I wanted to make stops at the UP yard to check out the yard jobs and excursion equipment for the steam program and also make a stop in Holiday Park where one of the Big Boy Locomotives is on display. Our first stop was on the I180 bridge over the Cheyenne Yard. My first moving train is UP 2000 working a small yard job.

UP 4004
Title:  UP 4004
Description:  UP 4004 is one of eight UP Boy Boys that remains on display to this day. It has been on display in Cheyennes Holiday Park since its retirement in early 1963, and is finally receiving a much needed cosmetic restoration. This is the third Big Boy that I have seen in person. My goal next year is to be able to get a chance to photograph the UP 4014, which is the Big Boy that is currently being restored to operating status. But for now, the giants on display will have to do.

UP 4004
Title:  UP 4004
Description:  A picture of the giant locomotive on the other side. The Big Boy was the largest steam locomotive to ever be built. They were built by ALCO between 1940 and 1944. Union Pacific was the only railroad to purchase any of these 4-6-6-4 monsters and were mainly used to haul heavy freight up and down the Rocky Mountains. Cheyenne was where most of the Big Boys would begin and end their journeys to and from the mountain ranges. Twenty-Five of these huge locomotives were purchased by the UP and all of them were retired in favor of newer, more efficient diesel power in the mid 1950s.

BNSF 5790 and KCS 3940
Title:  BNSF 5790 and KCS 3940
Description:  After Holiday Park, we jumped onto I25 and began making our way north toward Bill, WY, which is where we would make our next "official" train stop. I25 follows the BNSF Powder River Basin Line most of the way north up to Bill. Around the Glendo, WY area, a we intercepted a southbound coal train with a BNSF GEVO leading and a surprise KCS SD70MAC 2nd. This is the same BNSF route that passes through Cheyenne, WY. It passes over the top of both UP lines just east of Speer Jct.

BNSF 9763, BNSF 9806, and BNSF 5686
Title:  BNSF 9763, BNSF 9806, and BNSF 5686
Description:  A northbound coal drag exits the siding north of Glendo after meeting the southbound coal drag. Believe it or not, this is the DPU. Ive never seen 3 units tacked onto the end of a train before this. I wouldve taken the two grinstines on the very end, but a H2 AC4400CW is pretty neat too.

CBQ 5633
Title:  CBQ 5633
Description:  At Douglas, WY we had to get off of I25 in order to head north to Bill. We made a quick stop in Douglas and visited their railroad museum which displays CBQ 5633. CBQ 5633 is a 4-8-4 Class 05-A "Northern" Type Locomotive which was built for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad by Baldwin Locomotive Works in the early 1930s. The Class 05-A proved very successful for the CBQ on both passenger and freight service, and a total of thirty six were hosted on the roster by 1940 (Seven of which were built by Baldwin, the remainder by the CBQ themselves). Out of these 36, only two of these remain. The other is on display in Sheridan, WY. CBQ 5633 was donated to the city of Douglas after its retirement in the early 1950s.

Title:  UP 6446, UP 5665, UP 8744, UP 7164, and UP 8052
Description:  And right I was. A total of FOUR coal trains (three outbound, one inbound) sit on the yard tracks, either awaiting new crews or a chance to enter the mine it was destined for. On top of that, a southbound coal train had just received a fresh crew on the main line and was taking off south. I was able to grab all five trains in a single shot with some blooming sunflowers in the foreground. This would be my favorite photo I took all day, and is still one of my favorites out of my entire collection.

UP 7947 and UP 8726
Title:  UP 7947 and UP 8726
Description:  While Bill is essentially just a spot on the railroad for the UP, there are civilians who do live here and there are plenty of railfans who make stops here yearly. There is a Wyndham Hotel here along with Pennys Diner. We made a stop at Pennys Diner to eat some lunch and watch trains. I had a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake for my lunch which was both very good and filling. Featured here is the head end power of the coal train that was on the farthermost track from the photo previous.

Title:  UP 2643 and UP 7217

The road takes a 90* turn to the north right after the underpass. Dont think I would want to take that at 70 MPH!
