FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Photo Caption: "A pair of I-1 engines helping 110-car freight up the grade. Single J-1 is on the front end. October 24, 1949." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4543 and another locomotive whose number is not recorded. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods." #4543 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during August of 1923, rebuilt as an I-1SA in September of 1944, and retired in August of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. Also visible is PRR N-5 cabin car #477747. This photo comes from a slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-58) |

Here is page five of a seven-page cover article by David P. Morgan entitled "Straight Talk From The Pennsy." It was published originally in the July 1955 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 18. Shown here are two Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The leading engine is #4543, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1923 and retired in August of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service.
