Album Info:NJ TRANSIT replaced four bridges in the City of Plainfield from 2006 to 2009. This album will document the process of replacing railroad bridges--while trains are still running over them!! All four railroad bridges were constructed by the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) and were fabricated by the McClintic Marshall Steel Company in 1908. The bridges were erected on the existing abutments that were dated from circa 1873. The bridges are potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing resource to the Central Railroad of New Jersey Main Line Corridor.

The Liberty Street Hump!
Title:  The Liberty Street Hump!
Description:  What appears to be a hump over Liberty Street at MP 23.51 is only temporary--the track crews will tamp and raise the approaches between the bridges to provide a level run through the work zone as a temporary shoo-fly around the construction.

And just like that...
Title:  And just like that...
Description:  NJ TRANSIT track crews, in one full weekend of work, have shifted Track 1 to the northernmost alignment through Plainfield. In the distance is the newly-renovated Plainfield Station and a tamper making some adjustments to the new alignment. Tracks 1 and 2 now straddle the work area. Note how smooth the new alignment is, especially compared to the unfinished track in previous photos!

Ready for Stage 2!
Title:  Ready for Stage 2!
Description:  Workers inspect the new structure and track alignment at the conclusion of Stage 1 work. Note the height difference between the old and new structures: raising the bridge reduces the amount of ballast necessary to support the track, and therefore reduces the weight on the bridge. The extra height also provides greater underclearance (and less bridge hits) for vehicular traffic like fire trucks and tractor-trailers. During Stage 2, the older bridge to the left will be demolished, and a new bridge will be constructed in the location visible here.

Rail Heater at work
Title:  Rail Heater at work
Description:  Part of the challenge of installing welded rail in chilly temperatures is that it must be heated to a neutral temperature to provide a reasonable range of forces in the rail at various operating temperatures. Visible below this Teleweld machine is the propane burner heating the rail, in this instance, to about 130 degrees so that the workers in the distance can fit bolts when the rail is the right length.
