This is not really rail related, but the building is so attractive I had to put it in. This is the Greyhound station on Chenango St in Binghamton. Im not sure of the date it was built, but some time in the 1940s would make sense, though I could see it as a 1930s structure. In 2003 it was still in daily service, with not only Greyhound, but Shortline(by then a subsidiary of Coach America) buses as well. Shortlines territory was mostly in the NY Metro area and the Southern Tier, and they ran schedules from here to Port Authority and Long Island, as well as Corning, Olean, and Jamestown. The early morning sun lights up the building on a June morning. |

Rochester is thought of mostly as a New York Central town. This is understandable, as the Centrals Main Line came through the city hosting the Great Steel Fleet, as well as its extensive freight traffic. Lesser known are the minority players: B&O, Erie and LV, all of which had stations here. This is the LV station, which is now the Rochester location of the Dinosaur Bar B Que. If its as good as the original in Syracuse, its well worth the visit. |

The Erie station at Salamanca was one of their large stations, as the town was a division point between the Allegany and Mahoning Divisions. Later revisions abolished the Allegany Division, extending the Mahoning Division to Hornell, where it joined the Susquehanna Division at Cass St. Salamanca remained an important point, as the the Mahoning third and fourth subs met here. A yard and engine facility was maintained here until the end of the EL. Sadly, the station burned to the ground in a spectacular arson fire in 2014. |

For years, I would drive west on NY 17, and see this building from the highway when passing Anglelica. Finally, I got off to take a look. The building looks like something the Lackawanna would build, but the nearest DLW line was a lot closer to Buffalo. After some research, I found out it was built by one of New Yorks lost roads, the Pittsburgh, Shawmut & Northern, a regional that ran in northern PA and western NY, abandoned in 1942. Its now a private residence. |

Early in the morning. The DLW station in Binghamton has had one of the more successful post railroad careers for a station cast off by its owners. When I first saw it, in 1978, it was still in use by Conrail, and the famous newsstand was still open. Conrail eventually moved to an office in a building on Court St, with crew functions moving to the old Erie freight house. The building was sold several times over the years. It is presently in use by several firms, though ten years after I left the area, Im not sure who any more. In 2003, when this was taken, I recall there was some kind of design company there. They renovated the interior for their use, and made repairs so the building was sound. The last train left here almost 34 years prior to the date of this photo, Jan 6, 1970. |

The building stands to the west of the DLW station, partially in view at right, on the opposite side of Chenango Street. It once had tracks leading to it, as the DLW handled cars to the facility. Kilmer was famous for making Snake Oil. The building had been recently renovated. Not sure what purpose it is serving at this time. |

Like most of its division points, Erie had a large station at-Port Jervis. It looked a lot like the stations at Binghamton, Salamanca, and Kent. At one time, it had all the crew facilities youd expect at a division point, though by the time CR was into its first decade, crews reported at a storefront downtown. The exterior has been restored, and it looks a lot better now than it did when I first encountered it in the early 1980s. |

One of the more obscure northeastern roads was the Lehigh & Hudson River, which ran from Bethlehem PA to Maybrook NY, across west Jersey and into lower NY state. Not exactly high population density. They were a bridge route, handling traffic to and from New England via a hand off to the New Haven. First the PC merger, then the Poughkeepsie bridge fire dried up the traffic, and by 1976, L&HR was no longer viable. It was included in Conrail, but its days as a through route were over, and most of it was abandoned. The segment from Sparta north to Maybrook found new life when the NYSW reopened their line from the NY metro area, and used it as part of their stack train route to Binghamton. Despite being in the hinterlands, the town of Warwick had a very attractive station, remarkable considering the line did not have much of a passenger base. Its now a real estate office, and still looks good. |

The DLW station in Vestal, unused since the 1959 consolidation of facilities with the Erie, which moved all the DLW trains to the Erie side through Endicott, is now in the parking lot of the Vestal Library, where it remains as a museum. The right of way from just west of here to Town Square Mall is now a trail; west of Vestal, much of it is part of NY 17 as far west as Elmira. |
