Thomas Car Works in 1922. Car 409, on the left, was retired and scrapped in 1948, while car 842 was scrapped in June 1957. |

Description: |
New Orleans Public Service CEMETERIES LINE car 843 was on the layover track at the outer end of that car line, next to Greenwood Cemetery. This was also the half-way point on the WEST END LINE, which continued on to Lake Pontchartrain. The WEST END cars were replaced by buses on 15 January 1950 and the track here was abandoned on 20 August 1951, when the end of the CANAL or CEMETERIES line was moved to Canal Street at City Park Avenue. New Orleans Public Service, Inc. JACKSON LINE car 961 was inbound in the 100-block of South Rampart Street. This photo was taken shortly before the JACKSON cars were replaced gasoline-powered buses on 19 May 1947, and these were replaced with electric buses on 2 October 1947. Those trackless trolleys are long gone, but car 961 was still in service on the ST. CHARLES LINE in 2020. The Higgins Industries Building in the background was actually the PYTHIAN TEMPLE at 234 Loyola, which Higgins leased during WWII. |

Description: |
New Orleans Public Service, Inc. car 916 was outbound on the JACKSON LINE on Dryades Street approaching Jackson Avenue. Overhead was a maze of wires for both streetcars and the new trackless trolleys which were about to replace them. The JACKSON cars were replaced by gasoline-powered buses on 19 May 1947, and these were replaced by electric buses on 2 October 1947. The double overhead wires here would be used by both JACKSON and FRERET route trackless trolleys. The 3-story brick building in the background was the Spaulding Business College. It had been built for the Louisiana Industrial Life Insurance Co., and it was still standing in 2020. |

The locomotives had been built in 1942 as the 457A and the 452B, and were among the last E6 units built before the War Production Board ended the construction of almost all passenger power. They were retired in March 1968 and October 1970. |

Louisville & Nashville locomotive 245 was about to cross Poydras Street as it rolled along the Mississippi River in New Orleans. The train was on its way from the L&N station at the foot of Canal Street, where the passengers got off, to Julia Street Yard, where the train would be turned and serviced. The 245 was the last of six K-5 class light Pacifics (240-245) assigned to the L&N by the United States Railroad Administration during the First World War. It had been built by the American Locomotive Co.’s Richmond Works in 1919 and was retired on 22 June 1954. |

Description: |
The Louisville & Nashville‘s HUMMINGBIRD was awaiting its departure from the railroad’s JULIA STREET YARD in New Orleans. The cars had been turned on the wye at GENTILLY YARD and serviced during their layover in the Crescent City. This was one of four sets of equipment built by American Car & Foundry between September and November 1946 for this train and the GEORGIAN. E7A 759 had been built in April 1945 as the 459A and was one of eight units delivered in this blue-and-aluminum paint scheme to match the new cars, but the engines and cars were repainted into standard blue L&N paint scheme beginning in 1950. The photograph was taken from Julia Street and the building on the left was the yard office. |

Description: |
Louisville & Nashville train 34 – the northbound PIEDMONT – was preparing to leave New Orleans for New York City. The locomotives were E6A units 776 and 756; they had recently been renumbered from 456B and 456A but were still operating as a matched pair. At the other end of the station was a pedestrian overpass which ran from the end of the Canal Street streetcar line to the Mississippi River ferry boat landing on the left. It passed over the tracks of the L&N, Southern Pacific and New Orleans Public Belt. In 1950 the station was the site of the opening scene of the move A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. |

New Orleans Public Service ST. CLAUDE LINE car 1008 was on North Rampart Street at Conti on the line’s last day of streetcar operation. This was one of 20 cars which arrived in 1926, and they were the last streetcars purchased by NOPSI. Unlike most of NOPSI’s cars – which only had two motors – cars 1000-1019 had four. These cars were used on several lines until April 1935 when they were assigned exclusively to the ST. CLAUDE LINE, and all 20 were scrapped soon after they were replaced by buses on the day after this photo was taken. Northeast Oklahoma 80-ton GE 254 |
Description: |
Northeast Oklahoma Railroad 80-ton GE 254 was sticking out of the Louisiana Southern Railroad's engine shed in New Orleans. The locomotive had been built in October 1937 as one of five demonstrators (serial nos. 12184-12188) for the Cummins Engine Co. In 1939 12185 and 12187 were sold to the Northeast Oklahoma as the 254 and 253, while the other three went to Republic Steel. In 1949 the NEO units were sold to the Louisiana Southern as the 504 and 505. The Southern Railway bought the LSO in 1954, and these two locos lasted well into the Southern Railway era. The engine shed survived until this part of New Orleans was flooded by HURRICANE BETSY in 1965. |

It was withdrawn from regular service on 12 September 1943, designated as S&P car S-47 and placed at JULIA STREET YARD for use by Pullman personnel. |

Pennsylvania Railroad sleeping car 8351 BIRCH RIVER was laying over between runs at the Louisville & Nashville’s JULIA STREET YARD in New Orleans. This was one of 46 Plan 4140 10-roomette / 6-double-bedroom sleepers ordered by the Pennsylvania, Florida East Coast, Louisville & Nashville, Southern and West Point Route from Pullman-Standard in 1946 for service on the CRESCENT and other Southern Railway trains. All were built between October and December 1949. This car was placed in service on 14 October 1949, became Penn Central 4356 in 1968, was withdrawn from Pullman lease on 27 November 1968, was retired in 1971 and eventually went to the RAILROADER'S MEMORIAL MUSEUM at Altoona, Pennsylvania. |

This was the bedroom-side of Louisville & Nashville observation car 3301 ROYAL STREET while on display at the railroad’s station in New Orleans. It was one of eight Plan 4162 5-bedrooom / buffet / lounge observation cars ordered from Pullman-Standard by the A&WP, FEC, L&N, NYC and Southern for use on the CRESCENT and the NEW ROYAL PALM. All were built in February and March 1950. In 1954 the two L&N cars, 3300 ROYAL CANAL and this one, were reassigned from the CRESCENT to the GULF WIND and remained on that train until 1966. Both were withdrawn from lease to Pullman on 23 October 1968, retired in 1970 and sold to equipment dealer Preston Duffy. ROYAL CANAL was scrapped after a fire, but ROYAL STREET went into private ownership and, as of 2022, it meets Amtrak requirements and is used for excursion and charter service. |

Description: |
Louisville & Nashville E7A units 781 and 778 were on train 34, the northbound PIEDMONT at New Orleans. These units were two of eight E7A’s delivered in April 1945 as the 458AB-461AB – right above E6A units 450AB-457AB – and wore this unique blue-and-aluminum paint scheme for use on the new HUMMING BIRD and GEORGIAN streamliners. In late 1946 units 450A-461A were renumbered 750-761 and 450B-461B became 770-781; and at the same time, a reflectorized number plate was mounted above the front buffer. These plates remained until the units were remodeled with large number boxes and repainted into the standard blue-and-cream scheme. |

The 794 was retired in April 1972 and became Amtrak 224, while the 796 was retired the next month and was used as trade-in credit with EMD. |

Description: |
Louisville & Nashville class J-3 2-8-2 1518 and an auxiliary water car were photographed next to the turntable at the railroad’s Julia Street Yard in New Orleans This photo was taken on 28 August 1951, near the end of L&N steam operations into the Crescent City. The class J-3 was the standard USRA Light Mikado and, at 292,000 pounds, were the heaviest steam locomotives used on the line between Mobile and New Orleans. The 1518 had been built by Alco in 1920 and was retired on 29 January 1952. |

Description: |
In the early 1950’s the Louisville & Nashville’s shop in Mobile accented the trucks on passenger units with aluminum paint. As an example, here was recently-repainted E6A 775 on train 34, the northbound PIEDMONT, at the New Orleans station. The locomotive had been built as the 455B in June 1945, was renumbered in 1946 and was retired in July 1967. |

Description: |
Multiple-unit equipped Illinois Central SW9 9333 was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal while construction was still going on. On the other side of the locomotive is the NOUPT Railway Express Agency building, which was completed in 1950. NOUPT had just been placed in partial operation -- for IC, MP (GCL) and SP trains -- and it was placed in full operation on 16 April 1954. The 9333 was renumbered 1233 in September 1957 and rebuilt into SW14 1437 in September 1980. |

NOUPT SW8 2 |
Description: |
New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 units 1-3 were built at EMD’s Cleveland Plant in December 1953 and were used by the Southern Pacific until the new station was placed in full operation in April 1954. Here is NOUPT 2 at the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, with T&NO caboose 517. Notice the orange wing design on the unit’s nose. These disappeared as the locos were repainted. NOUPT 1 and 3 remained at the terminal until 1990, but number 2 was sold to Jones & Laughlin Steel around 1960. |

On 18 April 1954 Illinois Central SW1 615 was photographed next to the sand tower at Mays Yard, just west of New Orleans, coupled to SW7 9415. The SW1 had been built in June 1946 as the 9030 and it was renumbered 615 in October 1953 – just six months before this photo was taken – so its original number could be reused on a new GP9. The 9415 was renumbered 415 in December 1959 so its original number could be reused on a new GP18. |

Description: |
Southern Pacific 2-6-0 463 (second) was working at AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, coupled to a Harriman Common Standard passenger car. The Mogul had been built by Baldwin in 1912 as the 503, in the 500-514 group. It was rebuilt at the Algiers Shops in New Orleans in 1931, renumbered 688 (second) in 1949 and then 463 (second) in 1950. This loco was a real survivor, outlasting all of its siblings and most of the other steam locomotives on the T&NO. It was finally sold for scrap on 7 January 1957. |
