Clearance card |
Description: |
Here is a scan of what is known as a clearance card. It was used during the time when trains operated on a system utilizing timetables and train orders. A clearance card was basically a table of contents and a means of identification. Train orders would be issued for a schedule and when a train was assembled and ready to run, all orders issued for that schedule would be given to the conductor and engineer of the train. The clearance card would be written up by the operator and he would verify the information on the card with the dispatcher. The dispatcher would check his records and make sure the train was given all the orders addressed to it and give a complete time, in this case 606PM. The operator would give a copy of the clearance card and all the orders addressed to that particular train to the conductor and engineer. More than one train could operate on a schedule and in this case that is what was done. Another train had operated earlier using 138's schedule. This train is following and is also using 138's schedule and will be known as second 138. The train identification shows that this is actually 138's train. The train that operated earlier could have been a late train whose schedule expired or an extra movement. Kinda complicated but it had many safety features built in that were meant to avoid 2 trains being on the same track at the same time. |

Here is a consist from 1974 of the local that ran from Albany GA to Dothan AL. There was another local that ran from Albany to Arlington that handled local work between those 2 points while the local shown here handled local business from Blakely to Dothan. The local shown here basically handled work at Blakely and Hilton GA and Columbia AL. There was a Dothan switch engine that handled the Dothan chores. Cars going to Hilton were destined for the paper mill via the CIRR at Hilton. Note the carloads of coal in SLSF hoppers which were originating in the Birmingham area. Also note the CG woodrack. There were still a lot of CG stenciled cars around and the surprise here is only one was on the train this date. |

Consist of Dothan district local |
Description: |
Here is the second page of the Dothan district local, #167, and where it gets interesting. This local handled local chores at Blakely and Hilton GA as well as Columbia AL. Note the first two cars on this list. The first one is a carload of ice coolers for Freeman Company in Columbia, a wholesaler at the time of fishing tackle and outdoors goods. The second car is a carload of refrigerators desinted for the Western Auto store in Columbia. Western Auto was big in this area at the time and in the era before the Mart brothers...K and Wal. The rest of the train was vars destined for Dothan with many of them going to connections with the Bayline and H&S. Line 12 shows a carload of plastics that will go to the H&S to Slocomb AL. Lines 16 and 17 are empty 40 ft boxes that will end up at Hedstrom of Dothan. Hedstrom manufactured toys and bicycles and shipped a lot of them out in 40ft boxes at the time. Line 21 shows a carload of nails going to E R Porter hardward in Dothan. Porter hardware is one of the oldest hardware stores in this area and still in business today althought they don't do any business with the railroad. Line 22 shows to be a carload of "cans" destined to Standard Oil in Panama City. I would bet this was a carload of oil in drums or 5 gallon buckets. Line 23 is actually a intermodal flat going to Panama City via the Bayline. It appears to be a trailer load of copper wire for Southern Bell, the phone company at the time. Lastly check out the last car on the train. It says it contains "dishes" and most likely it was a carload of paper plates and other paper goods as the car is destined for Houston Paper in Dothan. |

This one threw me for a minute. During this time eastbound trains had right over opposing trains of the same class. I had assumed that both these branch line trains were of the same class making an eastbound 72 already superior to a westbound 71. However a look at an Alabama division timetable dated 6/15/75 tells the reason. Eastbound 72 was listed as a third class train while westbound 71 shows a second class train making 71 superior. Before 72 could occupy the mainline, he had to have something on 71 thus this train order. |

These type train orders were used when track gangs were occupying the mainline working on the track. A track foreman would have the dispatcher issue these type train orders and then he would put up signs at the limits designated by the train order as a further means of protection. A train should have the train order but in the event it was not delivered, the signs were another layer of protection. If a track foreman wanted to work on track and did not have one of these order issued, he would have to provide flag protection in both directions thereby reducing the number of people he had available to work. This type order was known as a "Y" order. The rule book gave examples of all train orders that could be used. The types were designated as example "A", "B", etc. This particular example was listed under the heading of "Y" therefore it became known as.....a "Y" order. They were used frequently and usually typed up in advance with the blanks filled in later as seen here. The particular foreman shown here is J E King....James Earl King of Clio Alabama. I knew him well during my days working as the agent/operator in Eufaula. I still see James Earl from time to time and he is doing well in retirement. He, myself, and several others from the Eufaula area went on a deep sea fishing trip many years ago....but this is a family oriented message board....we won't go into that. |

On this section of track, eastbound trains of the same class had right over westbounds of the same class. Class was designated in the timetable. In this case 135 and 138 are both first class trains moving in opposite directions therefore 138 would be superior. Before 135 could occupy the mainline, he would have to have something on opposing trains of the same class. Second class or inferior trains opposing 135 would have to have something on 135. This train orfer gives First 135 the right of track from Columbus to Trammels (the beginning of CTC which took precedent over train orders). If second 138 got to Trammells and first 135 was still at Opelika, the dispatcher could move second 138 further eastward by setting up a meet, say at Camp Hill. The dispatcher would have to set the meet up with the superior train first. In other words, he would have to issue a train order to first 135 first before delivering one to second 138. Another safe guard. |

This train order simply designates this train to operate as second 138. The lead locomotive number was the means of identification. We also know from this order that there will not be a third 138. If there was to be a third 138 the train would have read "Engine 3230 display signals and run as second 138 Trammells to Columbus". By not instructing them to display signals, this is the last section. All sections of a schedule would display green flags and lights except the last section. |

This train order sets up a meet between second 138 and an extra headed west. The extra must have something on every train scheduled in the timetable and this is what he has on second 138. The engine number of the extra (3136, an SD35) indicates this is a mainline train that has lost it's schedule (schedules stayed in effect for 12 hours, after that they were void) or simply an extra move brought about by heavy tonnage. It probably was a surprise move since dispatchers did not like to have to run a train extra due to having to issue a multitude of train orders. If the dispatcher had known this move may have been forthcoming, he probably would have "put flags on" a schedule going west so he could have run this extra as a section of another train. A train could not be designated as a section once it had left it's initial station. |
