Rear side of the depot
Title:  Rear side of the depot
Description:  Thurmond's depot was a museum or at least had a lot of historical displays when we visited there. That's our train, the "New River Train", with several Amtrak Superliner (TM) cars and a few others. The depot was painted bright yellow with white trim in October 1998, but I don't remember if the stairs or railings were painted brown, or left in their natural color. Regardless, this was a beautiful scene for me!

Looking east towards Hinton
Title:  Looking east towards Hinton
Description:  We're a good ways away from the Thurmond depot. The "New River Train" waits in front of the depot. You can see part of the eave or overhang of the general store in Thurmond. The folks there were as friendly as could be and they made the trip a very pleasant experience, even 15 years later! I'm just glad a hotshot freight wasn't coming along that first track-that sidewalk was about as much as we got! As for scenery, it doesn't get much better than this.

Looking west towards Huntington
Title:  Looking west towards Huntington
Description:  This photo looks to the west, towards Handley and Huntington, WV. The small grey building with a green roof is a general store, with some very friendly people who worked there. As for scenery, it's hard to beat this part of central West Virginia! I think the Paint Creek branch is the line curving to the left, and the main line is to the right.

East side of the Thurmond, WV, depot
Title:  East side of the Thurmond, WV, depot
Description:  This is another view of the Thurmond depot, looking west towards Huntington. This view gives a better look at the cars we rode on the train that day, plus another look at the scenery and hills of central West Virginia.

Looking at the New River from the train
Title:  Looking at the New River from the train
Description:  This is one of the most unusual pictures I ever took. We're traveling back, west, towards Huntington, and I thought, "why not grab a picture of the mountains and river?", which are two of my favorite subjects! By the way, the view isn't really at Hawk's Nest but it's somewhere east of it. I don't remember the location, as we're on the south track of the CSX, former C&O mainline. So, I pointed the camera towards the window and here we are. I thought the New River looked a little full or high for October, and the trees were definitely not as colorful as in most other Octobers. By this time, generally, the hillsides are blazing with brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, with a few evergreens hanging in their own struggle to survive. Anyway, this is to me a favorite picture. I hope you like it too.

Amtrak passenger station, looking west
Title:  Amtrak passenger station, looking west
Description:  We're looking at the east side of the Hinton, WV Amtrak station. This place was locked so nobody could get inside--a real bummer for a dyed-in-the-wool railfan like me! I haven't retouched this photo in any way except to reduce all the "space" from the scanning operation. One reason was to show the concrete steps we had to climb (negotiate??) in order to get up to the downtown exhibits. Besides, that gorgeous October sky was just too pretty to crop away!

The downtown area
Title:  The downtown area
Description:  Lots of folks were roaming the streets of Hinton, WV as the New River Train stopped near the Amtrak station, literally down the hill from here. This day featured street vendors plus other displays, museum exhibits and more. My wife and I had a wonderful time here!
