A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Jun. '19. Train was returning from Menasha, and likely points beyond. The white building partially visible at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The north leg of the wye can be seen beyond the trees to the left of the locomotive. Beyond that lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. |

A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah. |

A CN local pauses on a remnant of the former C&NW main line near the Loop-the-Lake Trail as it prepares to spot a boxcar at U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI, at 1426 hours on 2 Sep. '19. The idled Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., stands at left. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to Tom Danz, who had joined the company in 1999, in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. When the closure was announced, he claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking, and high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI and the George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware). Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., can be seen beyond that. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. This small, mostly industrial island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). This view was only available to trespassers until the Loop-the-Lake Trail opened last year. Loop-the-Lake was completed in order to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). Near the center of the scene, you can see a yellow tow motor/fork lift bridge that normally spans the tracks and needs to be raised when the local is servicing the mill. Boy, did I ever receive some suspicious glares from some paranoid employees while I was standing on the public sidewalk, next to the public thoroughfare, waiting for the locomotive to emerge from this facility. |

Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be at least five tracks crossing N. Appleton St., only the main line remains. The C&NW freight house stood just out-of-frame to the right, a team track remained for quite a while after the building was removed. The C&NW's downtown passenger depot, one of three in Appleton, would be visible to the left of the lead locomotive if it still stood. |

A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. |
