GATX Tank Car 94683 |
Description: |
GATX 38,500-gallon tank car 94683 had been built by General American Transportation Corp. in 1968 for vinyl chloride and butadiene service as a part of the GATX 94650-94706 series. It had a LT WT of 113,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 281,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds, and had an overall length of 82-07. These 57 cars were the second largest group of 6-axle tank cars, exceeded only by the 75 DUPX 29500-series cars; and were also one of the shortest-lived fleets of 6-axle tank cars, with a lifespan of less than 12 years. During 1979 and 1980 all of these cars were withdrawn from service; but their story didn’t end here. They were subsequently modified with 4-wheel trucks and returned to service as GATX 26701-26758. (Former GATX 98238 was also included in this group.) At least some of these cars operated into the 21st Century, but all were gone by mid-2013. |

DUPX Tank Car 12405 |
Description: |
E.I. Du Pont de Nemours 8-axle tank car DUPX 12405&was one of five cars built by AMF in May and June 1970 as DUPX 12401-12405. Most photos of these cars show their later appearance, after their insulation and outer jacket had been removed and the cars went into ethylene glycol service; but this image illustrates their original, insulated appearance. As built, this 38,273-gallon car had a LT WT of 162,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 364,000 for a gross rail load of 526,000; but removing the jacket reduced its LT WT to 143,200 pounds and increased its LD LMT to 382,800. Car 12403 disappeared from the Equipment Register in April 1991, but the other four operated into the 21st century. They finally went into storage in December 2007 and were scrapped by Schnitzer Steel in January 2010. The 12405 was dismantled at Dothan, Alabama while the other three were cut up at Cartersville, Georgia. |

MCPX Tank Car 23020 |
Description: |
Monsanto Chemical Co. tank car MCPX 23020 had been built under ACF Industries Lot No. 18-13181 in November 1966 as a part of the 23000-23036 series. These 37 cars were built to carry elemental phosphorous, and because this is 80% denser than water, they had the lowest capacity of any 6-axle tank cars, just 22,500 gallons. They had a LT WT of 93,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 301,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds; and although the cars were originally equipped with American Steel Foundries trucks – as shown here – at least some were refitted with Buckeyes. The last of these cars were retired in 1992. |

GATX Tank Car 26712 |
Description: |
General American Transportation Corp car GATX 26712 was on Conrail at Reading, Pennsylvania wearing a 1075 (liquified petroleum gas) placard. This car had been built by GATC in June 1968 with 6-wheel trucks as a part of the GATX 94650-94706 series for vinyl chloride and butadiene service, but after about 12 years, the entire group (along with car 98238) was modified with 4-wheel trucks for LPG service and renumbered GATX 26701-26758. The change lowered the cars’ LT WT from 113,000 pounds to 106,000, their LD LMT from 281,000 pounds to 157,000 and their gross rail load from 394,00 pounds to 263,000. At least some of these cars operated into the 21st Century, but all were gone by mid-2013. The HRXH stencil indicates this car was last serviced by Hugo Railcar Repair at Hugo, Oklahoma. |

ACFX 8-axle tank car 17785 was photographed on Conrail at Reading, Pennsylvania. This 42,473-gallon car had a CAPY of 301,300 pounds and a LT WT of 138,700 pounds, for a gross rail load of 440,000 pounds. This was one of 02 cars (17779-17790) built under ACF Industries Lot No. 71-14188 for its Shippers' Car Line Division in August 1970, and they were initially leased to Uniroyal, Inc. for vinyl chloride service. The last trace report for this car was on the West Tennessee Railroad at Carroll, Tennessee in July 2006. Carroll is on the north side of!Jackson and is the location of a couple of scrap yards, so we can assume the car did not leave there in one piece. |

ACFX 85302 |
Description: |
ACFX 85299-85302 were constructed under ACF Industries Lot No. 71-13576 in September 1969. The 26,600-gallons cars were built for the Shippers' Car Line Division of ACF and initially leased to Nalco Chemical Co. for motor fuel anti-knock compound (tetraethyl lead) service. They were originally painted blue with prominent Nalco lettering, but at least this one was repainted black with metric data. After the introduction of catalytic converters on most vehicles in the 1975 model year, the use of tetraethyl lead as a motor fuel additive steadily declined and these cars were retired by 1987. The car was photographed at the Illinois Central Gulf's NORTH BATON ROUGE YARD, near the Ethyl Corporation’s anti-knock compound plant. |

CELX 7501 was one of three such cars (7500-7502) owned by Celtrans. They were built by General American Transportation Corp. in July 1968 and had a capacity of 47,400 gallons. As such, they were among the largest tank cars built; but they were equipped with 70-ton trucks (instead of the more common 100-ton variety) and had a gross rail load of 440,000 pounds. Built to carry methanol, they were regularly seen on the Missouri Pacific and the Southern in Louisiana, and were retired in 1995. This one was shot on Southern No. 114, the Houston-Birmingham run-through train from the MP, in New Orleans.
