CNW 4-6-2 #617 - Chicago & North Western
Title:  CNW 4-6-2 #617 - Chicago & North Western
Description:  One of only two E class Pacifics to be fitted with an air-smoothed casing like the E-4 Hudsons (#620 was the other loco), CNW #617 looks odd as it sits in the scrap line in Chicago, IL, with the missing piece over its smokestack. Originally built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1917 as CNW 1617, it went through a major rebuild in October of 1941 included the streamlined engine shroud, an applied stoker and an increased boiler pressure to psi to 200 psi. It was renumbered CNW 617 in 1952. After nearly 39 years of service the loco was scrapped on 7/6/1956. Rebuilt specs - class E, 75" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 279,000 lb, tractive effort of 39,600. No photographer was listed for the photo.

CNW 4-6-2 #620 - Chicago & North Western
Title:  CNW 4-6-2 #620 - Chicago & North Western
Description:  Only two class E 4-6-2 Pacifics were given the streamlined shroud - CNW #620 seen here and CNW #617. Originally built by Alco-Schenectady as a traditional CNW 4-6-2 Pacific #1620, it went through several changes during its lifetime. In August of 1938, the boiler pressure was increased to 200 psi resulting in an increased tractive effort. In February of 1940, a stoker was applied. In December of 1941, the loco was streamlined with a new engine shroud seen in this photo. Finally, the loco was renumbered CNW 620 in 1952. After nearly 39 years of service, the loco was scrapped in August of 1956. This may be one of the very last photos taken of it before meeting the scrapper's torch. Rebuilt specs - class E, 75" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 263,500 lb, tractive effort of 39,600 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

Title:  CNW 4-6-2 #614 - Chicago & North Western
Description:  Built by Alco-Schenectady in October of 1916 as CNW 1614, it led a useful life for the Chicago & North Western. The loco was rebuilt in August of 1941 with an added stoker and an increased psi. Surprisingly, the loco was still in full service in 1954 and ironically, its last run on 5/22/1956 in Chicago was to replace a broken down diesel. Rebuilt specs - serial #56233, class E, 75" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 263,500 lb, tractive effort of 39,600 lb. A stoker was applied in May of 1942. No photographer was listed for the photo.
