PRR Passenger Station Wreck, #1 of 2, 1899
Title:  PRR Passenger Station Wreck, #1 of 2, 1899
Description:  iStation. Here is the first of two images of photos by unidentified photographers taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 21 December 1899. Shown here is the carnage of a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train that derailed near the Passenger Station. The train lost its brakes while descending the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains, jumped the tracks near 14th Street, and demolished another freight on an adjacent track. Several PRR men died in the process. Here, PRR engine #1280 assists in the recovery effort; it's an H-3 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1888 and retired in July of 1913 after 25 years of service. The Station's trainshed is at the right; discernable through the haze is the cathedral-like Middle Roundhouse. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge. William E. Burket Collection.
